Botox at a glance

  • First effects: usually 3 to 5 days after treatment.
  • Full results: around 10 to 14 days.
  • How long it lasts: typically 3 to 4 months; for some people, up to 6.
  • Treatment time: about 10 to 15 minutes, with no downtime.

Botox is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the United States, and for good reason: it is quick, predictable and very effective at softening expression lines. The two questions we hear most from patients in Downers Grove and across DuPage County are "When will I see results?" and "How long will it last?" Here are straight answers, plus what affects your timeline and how to get the most out of each treatment.

How Botox works

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. Injected in tiny, precise amounts, it temporarily relaxes the specific muscles that create expression lines, such as the ones that crease your forehead when you raise your eyebrows. When the muscle relaxes, the skin above it smooths out.

That makes Botox best for dynamic wrinkles, the lines caused by movement. It is FDA-approved for cosmetic use on:

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows (the "11s")
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Crow's feet at the corners of the eyes
  • Vertical neck bands (platysma bands)

Deep lines that are visible even when your face is at rest usually improve with Botox over time, but may also benefit from a dermal filler.

When will you see Botox results?

Botox does not work instantly. It takes time for the product to block the nerve signals to the muscle.

  • Days 1 to 2: little visible change. Any small injection bumps disappear within about an hour.
  • Days 3 to 5: you start to notice that the treated muscles are weaker and lines are softening.
  • Days 10 to 14: full results. This is the right time to judge the outcome and, if needed, schedule a touch-up.

If you have an event coming up, plan your treatment at least two weeks ahead so you are seeing the finished result.

How long does Botox last?

For most people, Botox lasts 3 to 4 months. As the effect wears off, muscle movement gradually returns and lines slowly reappear. It does not stop working overnight, and your lines do not come back worse than before.

Some people get closer to 6 months, and some find it wears off sooner. The main factors are:

  • Muscle strength. Stronger muscles, such as a very active frown, tend to break through sooner.
  • Dose. Too little product wears off faster. Your injector will recommend an amount based on the area and your anatomy.
  • Metabolism and activity. People with a fast metabolism or who do a lot of endurance exercise sometimes notice a shorter duration.
  • Treatment history. First-time patients often find the first treatment wears off a little quicker. With regular treatments, the muscles are used less and many people find results last longer.

How to make Botox last longer

  • Stay on schedule. Re-treating as movement returns, rather than waiting until lines are fully back, helps keep lines from re-etching.
  • Protect your skin from the sun. Daily SPF prevents new damage that makes lines more visible.
  • Look after your skin. A good routine, including a retinoid and medical-grade skincare, improves the skin's surface while Botox handles the movement.
  • Follow aftercare on the day. It will not change how long Botox lasts, but it helps the product stay where it was placed.

What to expect at your appointment

At Metamorphosis Med Spa, every injection is performed by one of our two physicians. Your appointment starts with a conversation about what bothers you and how natural you want to look. Your physician will assess how your face moves and mark the injection points.

The injections themselves take only minutes. A very fine needle is used, and most people describe it as a quick pinch. You can return to work or your day straight away.

Aftercare

  • Stay upright for about 4 hours.
  • Do not rub or massage the treated areas for the rest of the day.
  • Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and facials for 24 hours.
  • Small bruises are possible and fade within a few days.

Botox, Dysport or Xeomin?

All three are botulinum toxin type A products that work in the same way. Dysport can take effect slightly faster for some people. Xeomin is a "naked" formulation without accessory proteins. Duration is similar across all three. Your physician will recommend the best fit; see our wrinkle relaxers page for an overview.

Timing Botox around your calendar

Because Botox takes up to two weeks to reach its full effect, book about two weeks before any event you want to look your best for: a spring or summer wedding, a graduation, family photos or the holiday party season. That leaves time for your follow-up visit if a small adjustment is needed. Unlike laser treatments, Botox has no sun restrictions, so it works in any season.

When choosing a Botox provider, look for:

  • A follow-up at two weeks so small adjustments can be made
  • Genuine, FDA-approved product

Frequently asked questions

Does Botox hurt?

Very little. The needle is extremely fine and each injection takes a second. Most people rate the discomfort as mild.

Will I look frozen?

Not if it is done well. The goal is to soften lines while keeping natural expression. You can always start with a conservative dose and add more at your follow-up.

What happens if I stop getting Botox?

Muscle movement returns gradually and your lines return to how they would have looked without treatment. Botox does not make wrinkles worse.

How often should I get Botox?

Most people return every 3 to 4 months. Your physician will help you find the interval that keeps you looking consistent.
