Laser hair removal at a glance

  • Sessions: most people need several treatments, commonly 4 to 8, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart.
  • Treatment time: a few minutes for the upper lip; up to an hour for full legs or back.
  • Downtime: little to none. Mild redness usually settles within a few hours.
  • Results: treated hairs shed over 1 to 3 weeks; lasting reduction builds with each session.

Shaving, waxing and plucking all work, but only for a few days or weeks at a time. Laser hair removal is different: it disables the follicle itself, so hair grows back finer and sparser after each treatment until, for most people, there is little left to remove. Here is what a laser treatment for hair removal actually involves at our Downers Grove med spa, why it takes more than one visit, and how to tell how many sessions you are likely to need.

How laser hair removal works

The laser emits light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. That light turns to heat, which travels down the hair shaft and damages the follicle that produces it, without harming the skin around it. A damaged follicle produces a thinner hair, or none at all.

Because the laser targets pigment, the contrast between hair and skin matters. Dark hair responds best. Very light blonde, red, gray and white hair has too little pigment to absorb the energy, so laser is usually not effective on it. Your provider will set the laser for your skin tone and hair type, which is one reason a consultation comes first.

Why you need more than one treatment

Hair grows in cycles, and at any moment only a portion of your hairs are in the active growth (anagen) phase. The laser is most effective on follicles in that phase, while the hair is still attached to its root. Hairs that are resting or shedding at the time of treatment are not affected, and they re-enter the growth phase later. Spacing sessions several weeks apart catches each new wave of actively growing hair.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that most patients need 2 to 6 laser treatments. In practice, many people plan for a series of 4 to 8 depending on the area and their hair.

How many laser hair removal sessions will you need?

The honest answer is that it depends on four things:

  • Hair color and skin tone. Dark, coarse hair on lighter skin typically clears in fewer sessions.
  • The area. Underarms and the bikini line often respond quickly. The face can take longer, especially where hair growth is influenced by hormones.
  • Hormones. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and some medications can stimulate new follicles, which may mean more sessions or periodic top-ups.
  • Consistency. Keeping to the recommended interval matters. Waiting too long between sessions, or waxing in between, lets follicles slip out of sync.

Typical intervals are about 4 to 6 weeks for the face, where hair cycles faster, and 6 to 8 weeks for the body. After the initial series, some people come back for an occasional maintenance session to deal with the odd stray regrowth.

What to expect at your appointment

Before treatment

  • Shave the area the day before or the morning of your appointment. The hair should be present in the follicle but not above the skin.
  • Stop waxing, plucking and threading for about 4 weeks beforehand. These remove the hair from the root, leaving the laser nothing to target.
  • Avoid sun and self-tanner on the area for a couple of weeks. Tanned skin absorbs more laser energy and raises the risk of irritation or pigment changes.
  • Tell us about medications, particularly anything that makes skin sensitive to light.

During treatment

You and your provider wear protective eyewear. The handpiece is passed over the skin in short pulses, and most people describe each pulse as a warm snap, similar to a rubber band flick. Built-in cooling keeps the skin comfortable. Small areas such as the upper lip or chin take only minutes; larger areas like the legs or back take longer.

After treatment

Mild redness and small bumps around the follicles are normal and usually fade within a few hours to a day. Over the next 1 to 3 weeks, treated hairs work their way out of the skin and fall out. This can look like regrowth at first, but it is shedding. Keep the area out of the sun, skip hot tubs and intense workouts for a day, and use sunscreen on any treated skin that is exposed.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal is described as permanent reduction, not permanent removal. Most people see a significant, long-lasting drop in hair growth, and the hair that does come back is usually finer and lighter. Hormonal changes over time can prompt some new growth, which is easily managed with an occasional touch-up.

Laser hair removal for face and body

We treat most areas of the body, including:

Facial skin is more delicate than skin elsewhere, so settings are adjusted for each area. Laser hair removal works for both women and men.

When to start laser hair removal in the Chicago suburbs

Timing matters more than most people expect. Treated skin has to stay out of the sun and free of tan, and a full series runs several months, so fall and winter are the best time to start. Chicago-area winters keep arms and legs covered, which makes sun avoidance easy, and a series begun in October is usually well along by the time shorts and pool season arrive.

Starting in spring or summer still works; it just takes more care. Keep treated areas covered or in daily SPF 30+, skip tanning beds and self-tanner, and plan around vacations in the sun.

Frequently asked questions

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people find it very tolerable. It feels like a quick, warm snap on the skin. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip and bikini line are more noticeable, and cooling during treatment helps.

Can I shave between laser hair removal sessions?

Yes. Shaving is fine because it leaves the root in place. Avoid waxing, plucking, threading and epilators, which pull the hair out.

When will I see results?

Treated hairs typically shed within 1 to 3 weeks of each session. Most people notice less regrowth after two or three treatments, with results building across the full series.

Does laser hair removal work on blonde or gray hair?

Usually not. The laser needs pigment in the hair to absorb its energy, so very light, red, gray and white hair respond poorly or not at all.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

Cost depends on the size of the area and the number of sessions you need. We will give you a clear quote at your consultation, and payment plans are available.
