Microneedling at a glance

  • What it treats: acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven texture and dullness.
  • First results: a brighter, smoother look within about a week.
  • Full results: build over roughly 3 months as new collagen forms.
  • Sessions: typically a series of 3 to 6, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart.
  • Downtime: redness like a mild sunburn for 1 to 3 days.

Microneedling is one of the most effective ways to improve skin texture without surgery or harsh chemicals. It uses your skin's own repair process to rebuild collagen, which is why results keep improving for weeks after each session. This guide, from our physician-led med spa in Downers Grove, covers what microneedling does, how it compares with RF microneedling, what it can and cannot do for skin tightening, and when you can expect to see a difference.

What does microneedling do?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a device with very fine, sterile needles to create thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin. These micro-injuries are too small to leave a mark, but they are enough to trigger the skin's wound-healing response. Over the following weeks, the skin produces new collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm, smooth and resilient.

That renewal can help with:

  • Acne scars, especially rolling and boxcar scars
  • Fine lines and early wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Rough or uneven texture
  • Dullness and mild sun damage
  • Some types of surgical and injury scars (see scar repair)

At Metamorphosis Med Spa we use SkinPen, the first microneedling device cleared by the FDA. You can read more about how the FDA regulates these devices on its microneedling devices page.

When will you see microneedling results?

Microneedling results arrive in two stages.

The first week: a fresher surface

Once the initial redness settles, usually within 1 to 3 days, most people notice their skin looks brighter and feels smoother. Makeup sits better. This early glow is partly from the skin's surface renewing itself.

Weeks 4 to 12: collagen rebuilding

The more meaningful change happens beneath the surface. New collagen takes several weeks to form and mature, so improvements in scars, lines and texture become visible gradually. Many people see the best result around 3 months after their final session in a series.

How many sessions?

For general texture and glow, 3 sessions spaced about a month apart is a common starting point. Deeper acne scarring often needs 4 to 6. Because collagen builds cumulatively, each treatment adds to the last. Once you are happy with the result, a maintenance session every 6 to 12 months helps keep it.

Microneedling vs RF microneedling

RF microneedling combines the same fine needles with radiofrequency energy. The needles deliver gentle heat into the deeper layers of the skin, which can produce a stronger remodeling and tightening effect than needling alone.

To be clear: we offer SkinPen microneedling, not RF microneedling. For most texture, scarring and early aging concerns, standard microneedling delivers excellent results with less downtime. If firmness is your main goal, we will talk you through the options that suit your skin at your consultation.

Can microneedling tighten skin?

Microneedling can improve firmness modestly, because new collagen and elastin make skin denser and more resilient. It works best on mild laxity and on skin that is just starting to lose its bounce. It will not lift significantly loose skin.

For more noticeable skin tightening, microneedling is often combined with other treatments. Collagen stimulators such as Sculptra rebuild support deeper in the face, and our skin tightening page covers other non-surgical approaches. Some patients also pair microneedling with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) to support healing.

What to expect at your appointment

Before

  • Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids for about 3 to 5 days beforehand.
  • Avoid sunburn and tanning. Treatment is postponed if the skin is burnt or irritated.
  • Let us know about any history of cold sores, as we may recommend an antiviral first.
  • Microneedling is not suitable during active acne breakouts, skin infections or pregnancy.

During

A topical numbing cream is applied for comfort. The pen is then passed across the skin in sections, with the needle depth adjusted for each area. Most people feel a light vibration and a mild scratching sensation. The treatment itself takes about 30 minutes.

After

Expect pink or red skin, like a mild sunburn, for 1 to 3 days, sometimes with slight tightness or dryness. Keep your routine gentle: a mild cleanser, a simple moisturizer and daily sunscreen. Skip makeup for the first 24 hours, and avoid exfoliants, retinoids, saunas and heavy workouts for a few days.

The best time of year for microneedling

Freshly treated skin is more sensitive to the sun for a week or two, so fall and winter are ideal for a microneedling series. Shorter Chicago-area days and cold-weather layers make it easy to protect your skin while collagen rebuilds, and a series started in autumn shows its best results by spring.

Summer treatment is fine with a little discipline: daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+, a hat outdoors, and no sunbathing for at least two weeks after each session.

Frequently asked questions

Does microneedling hurt?

With numbing cream, most people find it very manageable. Bony areas such as the forehead and around the nose can feel more noticeable.

How long do microneedling results last?

Improvements in scarring can be long-lasting. General texture and firmness results last many months, but skin keeps aging, so most people book a maintenance session once or twice a year.

Can I combine microneedling with other treatments?

Yes. Microneedling pairs well with PRP, chemical peels (on separate visits) and injectables. We will space treatments appropriately.

Is microneedling safe for darker skin?

Microneedling does not rely on heat or light, so it is generally considered suitable for all skin tones when performed with appropriate technique and aftercare.
